Empirium – Quality improvement and research through case documentation

Empirium is a research project which pursues the improvement of case documentation and the collection of unselected patient cases for several purposes. After agreeing to a standard for documentation by three german professional associations, we now have developed the legal and technical requirements for collecting cases from health care professionals. The cases are submitted to a database and peer reviewed. After that they can be accessed by the participants and analyzed for several aims, e.g. clinical verification of materia medica, single case studies, comparative studies of different ways of case analysis and registration of remedies.
Documentation in an electronic way is the necessary precondition for either quality standard of documentation and submitting cases to database. For that we negotiate with the main vendors of medical billing software to integrate the homeopathic standard. Patient data will be pseudonymized, and patients give informed consent for the use of their data. Additional to the retrospective analysis of data there is also the option to implement different instruments of evaluation and thus enable prospective research. To attract participants among professionals as well as patients, several public relations activities are considered.
Research project and database are hosted by the Scientific Society for Homeopathy (WissHom - Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft für Homöopathie, Germany), financial support is supplied by the Foundation of Homeopathy of the DZVhÄ (Homöopathie-Stiftung des DZVhÄ, Germany).
